Most  chain saws are easy to use. You can also make sure they are safe to use by following these ten simple safety rules:

1. Keep fuel in clearly labeled safety-type cans and fill the chain saw over ground that presents no fire hazard. Move at least 10 feet away from fueling spot before starting saw.

2. Always wait for saw to cool before refueling. Never refuel while saw is hot. Keep fire extinguisher handy.

3. Make sure the saw is clean and free from leaves, sawdust, pitch tar and oil. Keep the handles free of oil and grease. Do not operate with fuel cap loose or mufflers or filters removed.

4. If there is anything wrong with the saw, get it fixed before using it. Keep the chain sharp and properly tensioned. A dull, miss-fitted or loose chain will chatter and buck, and can cause the saw to kick back.

5. Beware of falling limbs when working near trees.

6. Always keep both hands on the saw when it is running.

7. Never let the chain contact any obstacle other than the work at hand. Never let it contact other limbs or touch the ground.

8. Keep clear of a moving chain. Do not touch it.

9. After completing the cut, don't move away until the chain stops. Shut off the engine before carrying the saw between cuts and before making cuts and before making any saw repairs or adjustments.

10. Keep helpers and bystanders a safe distance from the operator and the cutting chain.
