You will probably see a rubber-tired front end loader during every construction job.   It is a very  useful piece of construction equipment. However, it does present some hazards which result from the nature of the machine and its operation. This kind of hazard can't be removed by the manufacturer but must be controlled by the operator if serious accidents are to be prevented.

You would expect every operator to understand the dangers that result from leaving the machine with the bucket raised. However, every year injuries are caused by falling buckets. Some of these injuries occur to construction men who should know better and some to children who don't. There are also a few older machines left with the pivot behind the seat which can crush the operator as he climbs under the raised bucket arm to leave the machine.

Loss of control during roading of machines in a serious problem. These machines should be roaded with the bucket to the rear. This places the steered wheels ahead and reduces the danger of over steering. The short wheelbase and lack of springs causes "porpoising" or pitching to develop at high speeds on rough roads. You should watch for this tendency and reduce speed before it becomes serious. Some manufacturers suggest reducing tire pressure in one front time and the rear tire on the opposite side to help control this problem.

Hauling riders in the bucket is another cause of frequent serious accidents. The only safe place is to ride is on the seat.

Finally, there is always the danger of backing over a man while working. The operator must watch for and warn men who get in the backing area.
