With the weather getting warmer, it is almost time to start using fans again!  But, before we use our fans, there are some safety precautions we need to consider.

 Before plugging a fan in, we should check for the following:

1. Check the general condition of the fan
   • Any damage to the fan guard
   • Any missing bolts to the fan guard
   • Any damage to the blades
   • Any missing/damaged parts to the fan motor
2. Check the power cord
   • Check for damage to the cord
   • Check for any bare wires
   • Check the plug for any damage or missing ground prongs
3. Extension cords should not be used on a permanent basis to power the fan
4. IF ANY OF THE ABOVE APPLIES, DO NOT USE THE FAN!  CONTACT YOUR MAINTAINENCE DEPARTMENT OR YOUR SAFETY COORDINATOR IMMEDIATELY!

 Once you have determined that the fan is serviceable, you are ready to plug the fan in.

After you plug the fan in, perform the following steps:

1. TURN THE FAN AWAY FROM YOU AND YOUR CO-WORKERS!

• Fans have collected dust over the winter, so use caution when turning a fan on so you don’t get dust particles in your eyes
• Turn away from “clean parts” areas also

2. Listen for any unusual noise such as:
   • Vibration
   • Motor noise
3. Check electrical connections at motor to ensure no “arcing” is taking place
4. IF ANY OF THE ABOVE APPLIES, DO NOT USE THE FAN!  CONTACT YOUR MAINTAINENCE DEPARTMENT OR YOUR SAFETY COORDINATOR IMMEDIATELY!
